British Game Alliance Update and Important MP Letter

Alan Beynon BVM&S MRCVS

The BGA has made some considerable progress in recent months with nearly 550 shoots now signed up and backing the principals of the organisation.

New markets have been opened up in anticipation of the start of the shooting season and there has been great efforts in promoting game into the retail space. One of the constraints that prevent this market place being more established is an end to end auditing system.

In response to this, Kenny Nutting and I have been working over the last few months to produce a Game Farmers Standard based on the sound principals established in the DEFRA welfare code for the rearing and release of game birds.

This BGA Standard is currently being tested on a number of game farms to understand any problems before we set it out for next seasons rearing season. We have had some very positive feedback and some constructive criticism that has helped to make it more workable.

One of the important aspects of this system is a passport that follows the chicks and poults to the shoot allowing better transfer of information.

The biggest highlight for me so far however is the support offered by several Members of Parliament for the work carried out by the BGA which is very encouraging in the current environment. Please click here to read the letter, that has been signed by nearly forty Members of Parliament and House of Lords showing the importance of the BGA.

Gathering public and parliamentary support for shooting and what gamekeepers do for the environment and in creating a healthy and nutritious food source is an important part of what the BGA have and continue to campaign for. If you are not already a member, please join and be a part of a sustainable future for game shooting.
